Biodesign: simulmedic

On 2013, I was introduced to an academic in anesthesia from our School of Medicine. Fernando Altermatt MD had the impression that better things could be done to train some puncture procedures in a more efficient way. Today, simulation devices for training are expensive, non-scalable and they rely on a trainer’s subjective feedback. After doing ethnographic research, we figured out that there were clear opportunities for innovation in the field. We developed a technology that allows individuals to train autonomously using objective feedback to assess their progress over time. We did the design in-house with the help of one of our students (which is involved in the patent) and we have been making progress through getting new grants for validation of our research. We have also travelled abroad (Silicon Valley) to partner with other individuals that can help us in finally market our new developed simulation platform.
